Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY

Although located at its current site on Fifth Avenue in New York City since 1880, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has never really been finished. Starting in 1888 and continuing to the present day, the museum has been expanding, renovating, and mounting ever-changing exhibitions of world-class art. For the last 60 years, Severud Associates has been providing the structural engineering services that the Met needs to maintain its continual growth.

Projects have ranged from investigating the capacity of existing framing to support artworks, such as the stone statues in the Chinese Sculpture Gallery, to designing additions to the Greek and Roman galleries and the Rockefeller wing. Multiple renovations, such as the parking garage, mechanical equipment supports, and staff offices have also been designed. Engineers have developed detailed logistics strategies to minimize the impact on ongoing museum operations and to make best use of limited access to the site during construction.
